What I learned from my 40 day social media break

I know many of you have been following, or rather not following my 40 days off social media experiment and so I wanted to sit down and share with you what I learned in the hopes that maybe it will help you think about your own social media usage.

Maybe it will inspire you to also take 40 days off or change the way you use socials. Maybe this post will help you better understand the people in your life who are constantly attached to their phones, or maybe it will make you think about the things you do give your power away to in your own life and take that power back!

So, Why did I take 40 days off social media?

I haven’t had a break from social media since I first signed up for MySpace. I was going to say Facebook, but actually, it started long before that! I dabbled a couple of times with taking weekends off, Sundays off and I did try to take a week off at one point before I went in for 40 days, but in the interest of transparency, I did look at my feeds more than a few times via my laptop during that time!

Anyway, that’s a long time to be on social media without a break and I was really starting to feel it.

I love social media. I love connecting with my community and friends on these platforms and I love finding new people and accounts. I’ve actually made some amazing lifelong friends from meeting on socials!

But as we are all only too aware these days, social media is a double edged sword.

As much as I was loving the connections and community, I was also starting to notice some negatives. I was spending more time on socials than I wanted to, not just posting for my biz and connecting in positive ways, but scrolling mindlessly and I was also become aware of just how much I fell into comparison and (self) judgement at times.

Cats don’t use social media and they seem pretty happy!

I also started to notice that when I spent too much time on socials my energy didn’t feel so good and my intuition didn’t feel so clear, and not just in the moment of scrolling or briefly afterwards, but longer term.

When I took time to meditate on that I could clearly see that social media was part of the problem. Not only was I picking up on waaaay too much of everyone else’s energy, it was also messing with my nervous system putting me in flight or flight mode and making me feel like I had to constantly be doing something – posting more, having a bigger or deeper impact, commenting more, just generally doing more.

And while I was still able to set some boundaries for myself (not using socials on the weekends for example), I knew I had to do something big before socials became a big problem.

Why 40 days?

40 days is a pretty magical amount of time.

Jesus went into the desert for 40 days where he was tempted by the devil.

40 days is considered the amount of time needed to break a habit and change your conscious mind.

In Kundalini Yoga we often do a specific kriya (set of movements) or meditation for 40 days to not only change a habit but also your destiny.

40 days is a long time, but it’s also not really. It’s achievable. It’s not like you’re signing yourself up for being off social media forever, but it’s also enough time to really get a break and notice the changes.

My findings

OK, enough rambling, so what actually happened when I took 40 days off social media?

I felt relieved.

While I was a little hesitant to put up that post that I was getting off socials for 40 days (meaning I had to go through it!), once the posts were up and the apps were deleted off my phone I actually just felt a deep sense of relief.

I played a lot of Homescapes.

With no social media or work email (I removed that off my phone a while ago!) on my phone, whenever I had nothing to do and picked up my phone, I played Homescapes. As of writing this I’m on level 3290 but although I’ve played it a lot, I can easily just play a few rounds and put my phone down again. I actually also find it really helps when my anxiety pops up to say hello. If you play too add me as a friend! :P

My business did not suffer.

There was actually one week where I sold more digital courses and kits than I had in ages! I stayed in contact with my newsletter subscribers and let them know about workshops and other offerings and while I know that social media is good for my business it was nice to know that people are still finding my work whether I’m posting constantly on socials or not.

Getting off socials also helped me to get clearer about my business, what I’m creating and how I want to show up in the world! I got loads of downloads and ideas about new offerings and workshops.

Time went slower.

When I posted I was back, one person commented saying that the time went quickly, but actually I felt like I was off social media for ages! If time feels like it’s moving too fast, take a break from socials and see if you feel the difference!

I enjoyed the moment.

Without thinking about posting on social media I found myself more present in the moment. Instead of thinking – I have to get photos of this for social media, I was much more able to just be. I still took photos, but they were for me, my friends and family, not for the whole world.

Spent more time walking on the beach than taking photos on the beach, except this one. 😅

I found some deeper self-love.

Without trying to take selfies for socials or scrolling through and judging myself against a bajillion selfies and pics of stunning humans, I found myself letting go of some old, outdated beliefs I had around my physical appearance.

I read more books.

Less time scrolling = more time reading spiritual books and romance novels! I fell in love with so many incredible authors and stories which lit me up so much more than scrolling does!

I realised that social media wasn’t my only problem.

Sometimes when you take away what you think is the problem, you realise what’s really going on. Being addicted to scrolling (or anything) is often just a symptom of something else. I did a lot of shadow work, healing, deep diving and contemplation and uncovered some prickly truths and hidden gems I really needed to see but couldn’t until I removed the obstacle.

I didn’t miss it at all, until the end.

I actually didn’t really miss social media at all until about a week before I was due to come back. At one point I wasn’t sure I ever wanted to get back on socials, but during that last week I had a little buzz of excitement at the idea of getting back on social media, a buzz that I haven’t had in ages, and now I’m feeling more excited than ever to post and share and connect!

I’m making changes moving forward.

Right now, I’m not planning to put the apps back on my phone permanently. I think I’ll put Instagram back on when I have workshops or other offerings to share as posting on stories can be a good way to let people know about those since the algorithm doesn’t always put things in people’s feeds, but I don’t plan to be posting on stories otherwise. I’m also going to be posting like the “geriatric millennial” that I am, and stick to just posting photos for a while and see what happens.

And of course, that’s not set in stone. I evolve and change my mind all the time. But if you do see me posting my breakfast, lunch and dinner every day on stories, feel free to send me a DM and ask me if I’m doing okay! :P

In conclusion:

Take time to smell the roses!

Wow, I didn’t mean to turn this into an essay, but here’s the conclusion – getting off social media for 40 days was awesome. It gave me so much clarity, space, peace and really helped me reconnect with myself again.

I’m not going to leave social media. I love being connected to my soul fam all over the world. But I’m not going to be on social media as much as I used to be, and I’m going to take longer breaks whenever I feel called.

I feel more empowered, confident and conscious about using social media. I feel like I can move forward with social media as a tool I can use for connection and for my business and it no longer has any power over me!

The world doesn’t end when you take time off social media, in fact, it may just help you to see the magic in the world that’s right in front of you.

With love,

Everything Everywhere All At Once Tarot Spread

Everything Everywhere All At Once is a must see movie for those on the spiritual path. Especially if you have an interest in free will and alternate timelines.

The movie follows Evelyn Wang as she journeys through various parallel realities, or “timelines” as we often call them in spiritual circles.

Offering a lot of food for thought, Everything Everywhere All At Once explores the idea of being able to tap into these alternate lives and “download” abilities, traits, memories or experiences. We often do this with past life work. While we usually focus on releasing and healing, we can also call back the power, gifts and talents we once had. So why not do the same thing with our parallel lives? :D

To journey into another timeline

Take some time to get into a meditative and relaxed state.

Think about a decision you made in the past, it could be recent or a long time ago, something big or small - a job you didn’t take, a partner you split from, or what you had for dinner last night.

In your mind’s eye see things playing out a different way and follow that timeline to where you would be now if that different choice had been made.

Look for the blessings, lessons and gifts from that timeline, that version of events. Notice what abilities or skills this version of you was able to cultivate.

See these gifts and abilities being transferred to you in the here and now, and if the parallel life version of you needs something you have, pass it on to them too.

The ultimate message of Everything Everywhere All At Once is up to the viewer of course, but for me it was a reminder that although there may be thousands, millions, infinite Vixs running around, nothing really beats just being here now.

Have you seen Everything Everywhere All At Once? What did you think? Have you tried tapping into alternate timelines and parallel lives? Let me know in the comments or let’s chat on socials! :)

And now for a card reading spread!

As always, you can use this spread any cards you have - tarot, oracle, angel, Uno, it’s all good. You may also like to take some time to journal on what comes up for extra insight.

1. Why you’re in this current timeline

2. What you’re doing in another timeline

3. Other timeline abilities to activate

4. How to find joy in taxes and laundry

Full Moon in Cancer Tarot Spread

Happy full moon in Cancer gorgeous souls!

As a Cancer Moon myself I’m totally here for the moody, introspective, emotional support vibes of this moon!

A water sign, Cancer is all about emotion and intuition and this full moon you are being encouraged to really pay attention to the intuitive hits you’ve been getting.

No second guessing or distrusting yourself. Those nudges, those feelings (uncomfortable or excitable!) that won’t go away, it’s your intuition speaking to you.

A full moon in Cancer brings an invitation to explore, express and release pent up emotion.

If there are things you’ve wanted to express but haven’t felt safe, find a way. Maybe you need to scream into the void (or a pillow), go to therapy, get a reading, speak to a trusted friend, journal it all out and burn it or (one of my faves) just have a big cry to the universe.

Your emotions are a powerful guidance system, so pay attention to how you’re feeling. Listen to your body and your emotional responses.

This full moon in Cancer can also be a very healing time and can be used to clear out loads of old, stuck and stagnant energy from years or even lifetimes ago.

Your own empathy and sensitivity may be highlighted this full moon too and you may be feeling emotionally and energetically exhausted. Rest, feel your feelings and get some downtime, but also start considering how you can set some healthy loving boundaries with yourself and others so that you can show up in the world in bigger and brighter ways.

While this moon can be great for spiritual development and practices of any kind, this may be a bit of a pillow fort moon for many of us. If your practices this moonth involve hiding away under the doona (duvet if you’re not Australian!) for a couple of days, go for it. You’ll come out the other side more refreshed, rejuvenated and ready to rock!

LOOKING FOR SOME RITUALS IDEAS FOR THe Full Moon in Cancer?

  • Rest

  • Self-love and self-care rituals

  • Do readings for yourself with gentle oracle and tarot decks

  • Journal on anything and everything

  • Energy protection spells

  • Create art just for fun and just for you

  • Sacral chakra work

Why I'm no Longer Doing Wheel of the Year Readings and What I'm Doing Instead

Predictive readings are old school.

There I said it.

Of course, this is just my opinion and I still know many wonderful readers who choose to look at predictions and many people still love them, maybe even you, but they just aren’t for me. And they aren’t for the people who choose to work with me.

In my humble opinion, predictive readings take away your power and create self-fulfilling prophesies.

I honestly find it absolutely fascinating that the same people who believe in law of attraction, manifestation and free will are happy to sit down and pull 12 cards for the year to see what’s going to happen.

But you either believe in the ability to create your own destiny or you don’t.

Actually, okay, bear with me here. I do believe there are things that we are meant to experience in our lifetime. We do indeed have soul contracts, karma to work out and dharma (your soul’s true calling) to discover. But these are just points in the road. I believe that what we do and where we go when we reach them is totally up to us.

If you’re not familiar with Wheel of the Year readings, these are tarot or oracle readings pulling 13 cards (at least this is the way I’ve done it in the past) – one as a general message or theme for your year in the middle and then 12 cards are placed in a circle, one for each month of the year.

Wheel of the Year Readings have become kind of a tradition for card readers over the years, and the truth is, they are a great sell at this time of year (I’m writing this in December 2022). Many people love predictive readings, they just want someone to tell them what the future holds, that everything is going to be okay, that the year ahead is going to be better, brighter and full of love, joy and prosperity. And hey, who doesn’t want to hear that?

And it’s all fine until your wheel of the year looks like: January – The Tower, February – Three of Swords, March – The Devil, April – Death, need I go on?

Experienced readers know that these cards aren’t necessarily “bad”, but they can bring challenges and they do make even the most awakened among us roll our eyes like – oh jeez, not another Tower year!

And what a way to go into the year, believing it’s going to be tough, challenging, hard work, it’s like you’re exhausted from it all before it starts.

If the last few years have taught us anything, it’s that we just can’t predict the future.

I don’t know one single psychic reader who predicted Covid or the lockdowns or the impact and affect it would have on us all, emotionally, socially and physically. If you’re a reader and you predicted it all, let me know and I’ll happily stand corrected.

I’m really not trying to diss predictive readers here. there are still times and places where I’ll pull a potential outcome card for myself or my clients, but it’s always only ever a potential.

I could go into a whole thing here about my thoughts on the future and timelines and dimensional shifts, but let’s just put it in simply – no one really knows what’s going to happen.

Every intention you have, every decision you make, no matter how big or small can set you off on a totally different course, changing outcomes and changing the future.

When we do these long term predictive readings we forget that by the time we reach February we might be on a totally different path, a few different turns could have led us to a totally different part of the map. Which means those directions you wrote down to get to point X are not going to help you now that you’re not even going there anymore.

When we do predictive readings we do them from a specific point in time. We look ahead from where we’re standing. But as soon as we move ourselves into a different position, the landscape changes.

Working with tarot and oracle cards can guide us on our journey. They can point out things we’re unaware of, but instead of seeing them as the map, showing us where we’re going next, I prefer to see them as our companion on the journey. Our navigator letting us know when we’re running out of gas, or about to hit fork in the road. Their job is not to tell you which road to take but to help you figure out where you want to go and how to get there. Working with the cards can help you make your decision, but they should never be the ones driving the car.

OK, so say you still want to do a wheel of the year reading, I invite you to consider this question: WHY?

Why do you want to pull cards for the year ahead? How is this going to help you? What are you going to do with this information?

Please keep doing your wheel of the year readings if they feel good for you, but don’t just do them because you’ve always done them. Do them because you truly feel like they help and support you on your journey. And if they don’t? Do something else.

I still find it useful to have some new year rituals when it comes to preparing my energy for the new year. There is a collective buzz at this time that I really do believe heightens our ability to manifest. There is also a collective slump about three weeks into January, so it’s important to try to avoid hooking into that one too much! But you can absolutely use this buzzy high vibe highly emotional and hopeful time to do some spiritual work.

Here are some of the things I’ve found useful since I’ve let go of wheel of the year readings:

Zodiac Spread using the Goddesses Among Us Oracle

Do a Zodiac Spread Instead

This still gives you the option to sit down and do your 12 card reading but instead of predicting the whole year, each card position looks at different aspects of your life in the here and now. You can do this spread by using the houses of the zodiac or the energies of the zodiac signs.

Set Intentions / New Year Resolutions

Some simple intention setting can go along way. You can do this in so many different ways, but one thing I like to do is just sit and write down my intentions for each area of my life. I actually do call these my new year’s resolutions, you may or may not like that phrase, but to me it’s all about intention. It’s about sitting down and intentionally thinking about what I want to achieve, experience and feel in the next year.

I try not to get too obsessed with this list, and instead of looking at it over the year and berating myself for not having achieved everything, I revisit it to see if I’m both still on track, but I also remove things I’ve changed my mind about and add things I’m excited about or that have come into my life since. We’re all evolving, and our intentions and resolutions should evolve with us.

Word of the Year

Coming up with a word for the year can be a fun and powerful activity that helps you to tune into the energy of what you want to experience in the year ahead. This is really just another way to set intentions. Make your word something that’s not too specific like peace, joy, harmony or expansion. During the year ask yourself questions like – is this bringing me closer or further away from peace? How can I make joy my priority? Let this word evolve over the year if you like. Nothing is set in stone, including your word of the year.

Numerology

Looking at the numerology of the year and your personal numerology can be a really useful way to tune into the energy of the year ahead and help you to work with it to manifest your dreams.

2023 is going to be a 7 year which has the potential for a lot of luck, success and cosmic alignment, but it also brings opportunities for some deep spiritual and personal development in order to get us into that alignment.

If you’re interested to learn more about how to work with the magic of this 7 year check out my upcoming Kundalini Magick workshop – Luck and Light!

Set Goals

Why do a wheel of the year reading when you can literally just set some goals and work towards achieving them?

As with everything, goals shift and change and evolve over time, which is why I find it helpful to set goals for smaller time periods.

At the moment I’m into setting goals every three months, from solstice to equinox, equinox to solstice. At these times I sit down and write down my goals for my work, my personal life, spiritual path and for my general wellbeing. I make some plans for how I’m going to make them happen and then I (try to) only look ahead that far. Of course I’ll still be thinking of ideas for further ahead, when that happens I write those things down and come back to them later.

If something unexpected comes up, I make space, often letting go of one goal to focus on something else. Sometimes goals fall away and no longer fit, sometimes they come back around. When I set goals I do it with focused intention but also with grace, knowing that there are times to push to make things happen, and times to let things go.

As you step into the new year, or whenever you come across this post, I invite you to remember that you have the power to create your own destiny.

Yes there are maps and sign posts and some roads you must walk for a little while, but ultimately, where you go and how you get there is up to you.

If you’d like to join me for my Luck and Light Kundalini Magick workshop I would love to see you there!

We will dive deeper into numerology, intention setting and I’ll give you some Kundalini Yoga practices that can help you align to the magick of the 7 energy and activate the victory codes within you so that you can walk through your year knowing you have the power to make it magickal!

With love, light and luck,

Vix

Geminis often get a bad rap as they sometimes struggle to focus, ground, and dive deep, but Geminis who are doing the work on themselves make amazing friends who are always up for both a bit of deep spiritual work and also having a laugh! It’s a great time to look at where you’re making judgements about yourself or others and look at things differently.

Gemini is an air sign and is all about ideas. Make sure you take some time this full moon to just sit, meditate, listen and let the ideas come in. You don’t need to do anything with your ideas just yet, but be open to new perspectives, new solutions to your problems and new paths to take.

Gemini is a creative sign and you may feel called to start, work on or complete creative projects. In fact, if you can finally summon up the focus to complete something this full moon, you will should feel a huge weight lifted.

Break those chains by re-writing your thoughts with positive affirmations and visualisation.

And most of all, this is a full moon when it’s okay not to take yourself or your spiritual path too seriously!

New Moon in Sagittarius Tarot Spread

After all the intensity of that Scorpio Full Moon Eclipse and the Lunar Eclipse before it I think we’re all well and truly ready for a bit of Sagittarius magic!

The New Moon in Sagittarius brings us back into the world after all that inner work we’ve been doing and encourages us to take physical action towards our dreams again.

With Sag’s adventurous and seeking nature, this is a fantastic moon to manifest under, especially anything relating to travel, learning or getting out of your comfort zone.

This New Moon in Sagittarius may have you feeling a little more social again, so get out there and find some like-minded minds to chat, day trip, ritual or goal set with.

One of Sagittarius’ energy many wonderful traits is the lack of filter. This means you may find you and others are speaking more honestly and openly about your dreams and visions, which can be so powerful and healing, but do take care not to rock the boat too much, unless it needs rocking of course, then rock away!

Full Moon in Taurus Lunar Eclipse Tarot Spread

The Full Moon in Taurus brings an opportunity to release all the stuck and stagnant energy, thoughts, old beliefs and stories that holds you back.

Add a lunar eclipse into the mix and we have the perfect portal for some shadow work and transformation.

Taurus is an earth sign heavily concerned with the material world. While Taurus is all that when it comes to working towards your dreams, feeling luxe and opening up to prosperity, Taurus energy can also feel heavy and stubborn at times.

With the full moon and eclipse here we’re being asked to really look at what’s going on. To notice what we’re not seeing, or what we’re actively ignoring.

We can all be stubborn at times, we hang onto our beliefs, ideas and opinions like they are gold, but it’s only when we accept that none of us have it all worked out and perhaps there’s still so much more to uncover and learn about and experience that we can really be open to positive transformation in ourselves and in our lives.

Eclipses are not great times to manifest, but this is a great time to prepare yourself for manifesting money, abundance and prosperity by unpacking some of your own BS stories, judgements towards yourself and others, and to try to see things from a higher perspective.

Samhain Tarot Spread and Ritual Ideas

Dancing with your coven under a full moon never gets old.

Samhain Blessings gorgeous souls!

Known as the witch’s new year, Samhain, pronounced sow-in or sah-ween depending on your accent, is a big deal in the magickal community.

Known to muggles as Halloween, this is the time when the veil is thin and the spirit world can be accessed the most easily.

A time to honour and connect with our ancestors and our passed over loved ones, the sometimes dark creepy vibes of Halloween are not always representative of the magic, light and love that is available for us to draw down at Samhain.

However, as we meet with our ancestors and remember those who have passed over, we are faced with our own mortality, the reminder that we too, will go beyond the veil one day and return back to spirit.

Scaring yourself silly with horror movies and ghost stories is one thing people like to do at this time, but our ancestors are not “scary” at all, they are the most loving, powerful, protective guides a witch could ask for.

The fear we can feel at this time is often related to our own conditioning and fears around death, darkness (this is a dark time of year), and the unknown so it’s a fantastic time to do some shadow work, look your fears in the eye and remember that death is just the price we pay for this absolutely extraordinary experience of living.

It’s always a good idea to practice energy protection around Samhain, especially if you’re going to be attending parties, watching scary movies or doing deep shadow work. Imagine yourself in a bubble of light, call on your ancestors, guides and angels to protect your magick and all will be well. Keep yourself safe and enjoy the festivities!

Samhain is traditionally celebrated on the 31st of October in the northern hemisphere and on the 30th of April in the southern hemisphere.

Your ancestors and passed over loved ones are always with you.

Looking for some Samhain rituals?

As always, you can celebrate Samhain, Halloween or any of the sabbats however you like. But here are some ideas that may be useful in helping you develop your own rituals.

honouring the dead

If you do one thing at this time of year, do something to honour your ancestors and those who have passed over. Display their pictures, light candles and talk with them. Tell them what’s going on in your life, ask for the help with things you’re struggling with. Sing or chant for them, give them offerings of flowers, wine or food, set a place at the table for them as you eat. Do something to let them know you remember them.

Check out the shop for the Ancestors and Ancestral Healing kits.

Face your fears

What are you most afraid of? Our fears can be our greatest teachers. Think of your greatest fear and then journal, meditate or pull cards on what it is trying to teach you.

For example a fear of losing someone you love may be a lesson in loving people while they are still here, letting go of grudges and prioritising relationships. Fear of death may be a lesson in living life to the fullest.

Embrace Your darkness

Samhain can be a powerful time to remember you are only human. You are light, you are beautiful but you are also rough and raw. You have the capacity to both harm and heal, to love and hate, and while most of us on this path are aiming for love and compassion, there are times when it’s okay to just embrace the messy, ugly truth of the human experience. Let go of any guilt or shame you are carrying and own, love and embrace all the parts of you.

Make peace with your ego through meditation, healing practices, journalling and self-love.

Get witchy

Cast spells, read tarot, hang out with black cats, wear a pointy hat, watch The Craft with your coven. It’s Samhain and anything goes tonight! Express your inner witch and activate your power through magickal work.

Call on Spirit

Call on your ancestors, spirit guides and all those who are with you guiding you for support, for guidance and messages. You can do this through using tarot or oracle cards, through journalling, meditation, going for a long walk, or just pausing to stop and listen.

Pay attention to the signs you get at this time.

If you want to learn how to see through the veil safely check out my Through the Veil e-kit on the shop.

As part of your ritual you may like to work with this tarot or oracle spread!

Pour yourself a mug of hot cocoa and grab your deck. You can use any cards you have - tarot, oracle, angel, Uno, it’s all good. You may like to take some time to journal on what comes up for extra insight.

1. How to honour your ancestors

2. How to see through the veil

3. fears to face and release

4. A message from your ancestors
